Ovine Helminthiasis at Bako

The types and seasonal dynamics of gastrointestinal helminth parasites were examined using 24 tracer Horro sheep in 1990 at Bako Research Center. A pair of tracer sheep that were free from parasite were successively grazed on native pasture for a month alongside treated group. The tracers were necropsied for worm count and identification 14 days after their removal from pasture. Nematode (Helmonchus contortus and Cesophagostomum spp.) trematode (paramphistomum spp.), and cestode (moniezia) were prevalent. Of the 24 examined gastrointestines over 95 percent harbored H. contortus and the intensity of infection per animal ranged from 0 to 4150 with a mean of 815. The mean egg per gram of feces and worm load in dry and wet seasons were significantly different.
