Watershed Approach for Dryland Areas
1994
Gowda, P. Romana (IAR, Addis Abeba (Ethiopia))
The 'watershed' approach aims for overall improvement of productivity and restoration of ecological balance of the dryland areas. The catchment is treated as one entity with the main emphasis on the use of land, i.e. use the land according to its potential. The treatments are using both arable and non-arable lands together for effective moisture conservation practices identification and implementation of a sound crop production systems and afforestation, horticulture, and pasture production systems. The research results of the watersheds initiated-during 1984 in India are encouraging, especially during drought spells. The cornerstone for this is the effective management and monitoring of the resources.
