The new pig disease, which is in EC called porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome (PRRS), caused severe economic losses in most European countries and in N. America as well. The causative agent proved to be a Pestivirus of the Togaviridae family and is closely related to equine viral arteritis (EVA). This study presents all the updating data relative to the PRRS and the economic consequences due to this syndrome are especially emphasised. Certain measures are proposed to be taken in order to avoid the entrance of the disease into Greece. This is very theoretical since the country is importing most of its high index breeding animals. Finally, in case of the first outbreaks of PRRS in Greece, measures are suggested which need to be taken to reduce the losses, using the experience of other countries have been facing this problem
