Acridons as potential new herbicides

The effect of different acridon derivatives substituted with strong electrone-absorbing groups upon the photosynthetic electrone-transporting chain was studied on isolated pea chloroplasts. It was proved that, in low concentration, as "uncouplers" they separate PQ-linked proton and electron transport several times. Under conditions of limited illumination, in higher concentrations they inhibit electron transport like protonophors. Like SF6874 and FCCP, they include the oxidation of PQH2, which results in drastic decrease of variable fluorescence. Thus the substituted acridon derivatives studied affect photosynthetic electron transport as protonophores, and therefore may be counted with as potential herbicides
