Utilization of by-products of the grain silos and mills
1993
Horvath, I.
Since the introduction of mechanized harvest and threshing more chaff is produced in the silos and mills. At the same time the traditional way of using this by-product (feed, adobe) is no longer attractive. The present practice means dumping the chaff into communal waste areas. Recently successful experiments have been carried out on utilizing chaff in horticulture. Its dry substance content is more than 83 o/o and contains 2.43 o/o nitrogen. It has remarkable microelement content as well. The following uses are suggested: (1) In composted form it can be used to improve the soil structure. (2) It serves as an excellent organic manure as well. (3) Mulching. (4) Frost protection of grape, rose and young fruit trees. (5) Litter for animals. (6) Biothermic heating of greenhouses or plastic tents (minimum 1 cubic metre is required)
