The feeding and gustatory responses were investigated in the common cutworm larvae, Spodoptera litura. The larvae responded to sucrose, fructose and glucose as basic feeding stimulants. The larval feeding was stimulated by inositol, L-arginine-HCl, L-lysine-HCl, L-proline and L-serine in the presence of sucrose. The larvae responded adversely to amygdalin, phlorizin, sinigrin-H2O and L-methionine. Four gustatory receptors were found on the sensillum styloconicum-I and -II, respectively. The receptive thresholds of receptors to the gustatory substances were measured. Sugars activated the sugar-receptor as a basic feeding stimulant and inhibited the sensitivity of the "bitter substance" receptor
