The performance of the CERES Maize growth simulation model was evaluated at the UPLB [Philippines Univ., Los Banos, College, Laguna, Philippines] Central Experiment Station during the dry season 1988-1989 (December-March) and the wet season 1989 (May-September). The model simulated crop development by incorporating standard minimum data sets on weather, soil profile, genetic coefficients, and management practices; and predicting crop growth parameters for 8 varieties (IPB Var 1, IPB Var 2, SMC 308, SMC 317, SX 757, P-3228, P-3224, and P-3165) and 4 genotypes collected from farmer's fields, designated as Barile F2, Biga F1, Bogo F1, and Bogo F2. In the dry season trial, the model accurately predicted phenological stages, leaf area index, grain yield, kernel weight, and grain per square meter, but it overpredicted aboveground and straw dry biomass. All crop growth parameters were overpredicted in the wet season trial due to wind damage and lodging caused by typhoons
