Management of nutrient yields in green manure systems

A vast array of quick-growing legume species can be used as green manure crops. Nongrain and grain legumes green manures (LGMs) are often grown for in situ incorporation, and toppings of several perennial legume trees grown along field boundaries or elsewhere are used as green leaf manure. With proper management, nongrain LGM crops can accumulate more than 100 kg N/ha in 50-60 d. In addition, LGM crops can recycle several other nutrients in the soil; for instance, incorporation of green manure into flooded soils increases P, Fe, and Mn availability for the next crop. This paper reviews available information on the management requirements of LGM crops for optimum biomass and nutrient yields. Areas for further research - such as breeding for improved N2 fixation; screening legumes of N accumulation, photoperiod insensitivity, resistance to pests and diseases, and adaptability to marginal and problem soils; and determining the best cultural practices for reducing time and resources needed for growing LGM are outlined
