Dry matter accumulation and yield of sweet corn in response to nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium application

A three-factor field experiment with 5 fertilizer treatments was conducted to investigate the absorption pattern of N, P2O5 and K2O nutrients and their effect on the dry matter production and yield of sweet corn. The N, P, and K rates in the 5 treatments were: 1.) 0, 0, 0; 2.) 150, 150, 150; 3.) 0, 150, 150; 4.) 150, 0, 150; and 5.) 150, 150, 0 kg per hectare. The maximum rate of nutrient uptake was observed at tasselling stage with N at 4.88 kg/h/d. P at 1.25 kg/h/d and K at 6.14 kg/h/d. At this stage, N, P, and K absorption are 62.7 percent, 69.2 percent and 71.1 percent of the total uptake. Findings indicated that the critical period for nutrient application in sweet corn is from tassel initiation to tasselling. Plant height, leaf number, leaf area per plant, stem diameter, leaf area index (LAI), harvest index (HI), and chlorophyll content were significantly affected by the various N, P and K applications. No significant association between HI and yield was observed in this study. However, a positive correlation between yield and LAI was found (r to the second power = 0.977** ). Treatment 2 had the highest LAI (4.07) and brought out the highest yield. Other treatments had LAI ranging from 2.0 to 2.8, which were not sufficient to achieve high yields
