Crop-animal interaction in sustainable farming systems in wet upland transmigration areas of Sumatra

A crop-animal systems research was conducted in Sumatra during 1985-1993, involving rubber, food crops, and animals. Four farming systems model were tested (Model A: Farmers Existing system without animal; Model B: Farmers Existing system with animal; Model C: Introduced Farming System with 1 cattle + 3 goats + 11 chickens; Model D: Introduced Farming System with 2 cattles + 5 goats + 23 chickens). In addition, both alley-cropping and rubber-goat integration were practiced on the introduced system. The results indicated that Model C was the best in terms of farm income (more than 2 million rupiahs) and Marginal Benefit-Cost Ratio (more than 2.3), the income being 75 percent higher than the farmer system. Alley-cropping with Flemingia and Gliricidia was found effective in reducing soil erosion and enriching soil organic matter; the production of fresh weight was 74 t/ha/year and 36 t/ha/year for Flemingia and Gliricidia, respectively. Rubber-goat integration helped increase soil organic matter, reduce weeding, supply high quality animal feed, stimulate the growth of rubber, but not significantly affect the yield of rubber
