Potential for hill farm development in Bangladesh through FSR approach

Major observations that emerged through RRA are delineated in 6 sections: i) bio-physical environment, ii) present agricultural systems, iii) constraints; iv) development potentials, v) policy issues, and vi) R and D needs. Identification and piloting of mature agricultural technologies for linking to farmers group and rural agribusiness enterprises was explored. Potential for improving ruminant production given large forest and grazing area and prospective integration of goat and sheep in the rubber plantation were identified. Suitable agroforestry practices for resource poor farmers and SALT-type activities producing non-perishable high value exportable goods for medium and large farmers are potential opportunities. Homestead farming and horticulture are important areas of possible intervention. Prioritizing farmer's perceived needs and comparative advantages and disadvantages in the area, suitable organized small holder production systems augmenting income and welfare for the hill farming community was emphasized keeping in mind significant risk factors affecting hill farming such as abnormal rain, hail storm, erosion, land slides, drought, deforestation and depletion of forests. Sustained efforts are needed to develop, test and transfer package of system-based technologies through FSR that would have the hillfarm families "graduate" from the traditional farming practices on to organized small holder production systems that are closely linked to market and rural agribusiness enterprises
