This paper discusses some innovative approaches that are followed in farming systems extension programme (FSEP) in order to focus extension sharply on farmers' real needs and problems. The main features of the programme are stimulating greater participation of the actors-farmers, researchers, extension staff, non-government organization workers in FSEP design and implementation through bottom-up planning. The formation of farmers group, organizing block demonstration, farmer-to-farmer seed exchange in order to sensitize them about the use of good quality seed, make the farmer as change agent. This paper also focuses on conservation of natural base through integrated pest management, zero tillage, preservation and use of farm yard manure in integrated nutrient management, harvesting of rain water for supplemental irrigation, incorporation of green manuring and pulse-legume in rice based rotation. FSEP foster gender perspective through cultivation of vegetables in the homestead agroforestry, postharvest storage, and comsumption. FSEP promotes private sector's involvement in technology transfer training of agricultural input dealers. Efforts are made to build a systems approach promoting all possible forms of interaction and interdependence among the components
