A laboratory bioassay that incorporates Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) purified crystal proteins into an artificial diet for stemborers and dip assay for leaffolder has identified toxins to be effective against yellow stemborer Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker), striped stemborer Chilo suppressalis and two species of leaffolders (Cnaphalocrosis medinalis, Marasmia patnalis P). However, the stemborer species from different geographical locations have variable responses to Bt toxins. The IRRI collection from the Philippines has rich sources of Bt isolates. Two hundred sixty six of 471 IRRI Bt isolates tested against the yellow stemborer are effective and 4 of 28 IRRI Bt isolates tested against the stripped stemborer. Continuous screening of the Bt local (IRRI) isolates to identify other sources of Bt genes is on going
