Farm-level impact analysis of the adoption of the package of technologies introduced under the soybean yield gap analysis project in West Java and East Java, Indonesia

Findings of the study revealed that generally the potential soybean yields were not achieved by SYGAP [Soybean Yield Gap Analysis Project] participants in both districts due to the following reasons: 1.) not all the SYGAP participants adopted the whole package of recommended technologies in both districts; 2.) there was pest outbreak during the 1991 dry season in both districts (more serious in Karawang); and 3.) drought in Jombang. Results of the comparative and covariance analyses showed that the mean yield levels of the SYGAP participants and the non-SYGAP participants in Karawang were not significantly different. This could be mainly attributed to the fact that the soybean crops of both the SYGAP participants and non-participants in Karawang were attacked by pests. Thus, the yield-augmenting effect of the SYGAP technologies was mashed by serious pest outbreak in this district. In Jombang, however, the mean soybean yield obtained by the SYGAP participants was significantly higher than that of the non-SYGAP participants due to the adoption of the recommended technologies by the former. Costs and return analysis indicated that the SYGAP participants spent more on material inputs than the non-participants in both districts. Results of the coefficient of variation and variance decomposition analyses revealed that the adoption of the SYGAP technologies in both districts was very risky as evident from the higher variability in net income of the SYGAP participants as compared to that of the non-participants
