Trichoderma sp. for the biocontrol of stem rot of sweet pepper

Bioassay for antagonism of ten isolates of fungi against sweet pepper stem rot pathogen Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc. was done in the laboratory. The biocontrol efficacy of the most antagonistic isolate (Trichoderma sp.) was assessed in the screenhouse and field experiments. Trichoderma sp. (P-1) lysed mycelia of S. rolfsii at the highest rate of 3.88 mm/day. Trichoderma sp. yielded 15.15 x 10 to the ninth power conidia/g of dried taro tuber which was 6.2 times the conidial yield on the commonly used rice bran. Seed treatment with 10 to the ninth power conidia/ml of Trichoderma sp. decreased disease severity from 24.78 percent to 4.75 percent which means 80.78 percent biocontrol efficacy. Seedling dip of the same conidial suspension protected sweet pepper transplants from infection by S. rolfsii by 76.50 percent in the screenhouse. In field plots, seedling dip provided protection by 73.04 percent which was comparable to the level of protection due to the recommended fungicide maneb when applied as drench. Seedling dip requires only 7.6 percent of the time spent in drenching fungicide maneb per hectare.
