Heterosis and combining ability of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) after paddy rice conditions
1994
dela Cruz, Q.D.
Significant differences were observed among hybrids and parents for all the traits studied except for seed oil content where the difference observed in the parents was not significant. Differences observed due to parents vs hybrids for all the traits were highly significant indicating the presence of heterosis. A wide range of heterotic effects was observed for the different traits. A high magnitude of heterosis was observed in days to flowering, plant height, capsules per plant, seed yield per plant, and number of seeds per capsule. Combining ability analyses indicated that both additive and nonadditive effects were important for days to flowering, plant height, capsules per plant, 1000-seed weight, and seed oil content. Additive components of gene action is however, more important in capsules and yield per plant. Development of high-yielding pure lines could therefore be isolated through simple progeny selection. Potential lines for yield improvement are TW57, W53, W52, while among the testers, Native Catipon and Marinduque are the best parents
