This paper aims to present the advances gained and current efforts made to develop a hybrid rice technology for the Philippines. Results of the National Coordinated Trials showed significant superiority of an F1 hybrid over the check varieties in certain parts of the country. Its performance in three seasons at several locations is shown. Research achievements and current thrusts in breeding and collaborative testing of hyrbid rice between PhilRice and IRRI are described. Results of experiments conducted to standardize seed production practices for the country are presented. Outcome of efforts to identify the ideal seed production environment, considering location, season, and month of flowering are discussed. An estimate of the cost of producing the hybrid seed was arrived at by monitoring the labor and material inputs in some PhilRice stations within three consecutive seasons. Initial steps have been taken to transfer the technology to local seed growers. The focus of future work on breeding, seed production, and agronomic management of the hybrid crop is explained
