Susceptibility of the selected apple varieties to an infection by three species of spider mites

The most common species of spider mites (family: Tetranychidae) in Polish apple orchards are: European red mite (Panonychus ulmi Koch), two spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) and hadthorn spider mite (Tetranychus viennensis Zacher). A main purpose of this investigations conducted in several apple orchards was to find out the resistance and sensitive varieties of apple to these pests. Golden Delicious and McIntosh variety were most susceptible to T. viennensis. Cortland and McIntosh variety to - T. urticae and Golden Delicious variety to - P. ulmi. Such varieties like James Grieve showed high resistance to infection by T. viennensis and P. ulmi and Golden Delicious to infection by T. urticae. Spartan variety showed some resistance to all three species of spider mites
