An account is given of the latest studies carried out in Apulia (Southern Italy) on grapevine yellows. Infection foci were recorded throughout the region except for the northern viticultural district. Alarming outbreaks with disease incidence above 30 per cent were discovered in the Salento peninsula (extreme South East) in the native varieties Primitivo, Negroamaro and Uva rossa. No infection was observed in cv. Chardonnay, although its acreage is increasing in the region. Bait plants (periwinkle, clover and aster) placed in the vicinity of symptomatic vines became infected, demonstrating that yellows agents are spread by vectors. A number of potential leafhopper vectors were capturated in yellows-affectd vineyards but no attempt was made to check their ability to transmit. MLO-like bodies were succesfully transmitted by dodder from infected vines to periwinkle plants. MLOs were observed in the sieve tubes of experimentally infected periwinkles, in naturally infected weeds and in one of the many infected grapevines that were investigated electron microscopically.
