The challenges that the agricultural sector faces in meeting increasing demand for food and fiber, in increasing income, and in generating employment are discussed. Also discussed is the role of agriculture in fostering sustainability of the natural resource base, not only for individual nations but for the Mediterranean region as a whole, including developed countries
