Performance of single and mixed rhizobial inocula for nodulation and growth of lentil [Lens culinaris]

Podder, A.K. (Bangladesh Inst. of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh (Bangladesh))
Application of mixed culture inoculant is often practised to avoid inoculation failure. This investigation assessed the performance of single-culture and mixed-culture inocula under Bangladesh conditions, in pots in the greenhouse during two seasons. Rhizobial isolates that demonstrated proven ability in inoculation response were used to inoculate lentil (Lens culinaris Medik. cv. 'L-5'). Number of nodules, nodule weight, sun-dry weight of whole plant, shoot length and nitrogen content of whole plant were measured both at four weeks after emergence and at 50 flowering: mixed inoculation was superior for all characters. Considering the variability of soil characteristics and most probable number (MPN) count of rhizobia in Bangladesh soils, the mixed culture approach, might have a positive effect on successful lentil cultivation
