Main characteristics of qualitative (groups of benthic organisms) and quantitative structure (density and boimass) of benthic fauna, in 8 lakes and 4 channels of Danube Delta, are presented. Three taxonomic groups (chironomids, oligochaetes and mollusks) were constantly represented. Generally, in Danube Delta lakes, chironomids represent over 60 per cent in terms of density, and mollusks represented over 75 per cent in terms of biomass. For Danube Delta channels, oligochaetes dominated in density and mollusks dominated as biomass (between 95-99 per cent). The three kinds of benthic groups had the main role in accumulation and transfer of energy towards upper trophic levels (especially fish) in the aquatic ecosystems of Danube Delta.
