Investigations of the distribution species structure, biology and control of wireworms (Agriotes spp.) in Moldova

The larvae of click-beetles, called "wireworms", beetles which have a polyphagous food regime are among the most damaging. They are spread in all soils in Moldova, the infestation degree vary from slight (2 larvae/m2) to severe (more than 5 larvae per/m2) depending on soil humidity, organic matter content, preceding and cropped plant. Five generations and 113 species belonging to family of Elateridae have been identified in Moldova. The greatest share was provided by Agriotes genus with its species A. ustulatus. This species exhibited one generation every 5 years under the conditions prevailing at Secuieni. The soil and crop management factors (crop rotation, soil tillage and crop maintenance) contribute to lessen larval densities, however the pest was controlled by soil and seed chemical treatments. All insecticides tested for soil treatment provided suitable protection of maize plants against the attack of wireworms. All maize hybrids recommended for Moldova were tolerant to seed dressing with Carbodan 35 ST, Diofuran 35 ST, Furadan 35 ST and Seedox 80 W.
