Iron oxides formation in soils on local tills

Soils on calcaerous local tills of Leningrad district are dominated by non-silicate iron compounds, whereas in soils on red tills crystallized forms are frequent. Soils display a low magnetic susceptibility, which is in inverse proportion to clay content, and this testifies to the "amorphing" effect of clay minerals for magnetite and magnemite. Soils are poor in lepidocrocite. Haematite content may be up to 40 % of the total iron in a soil on red tills; there are tight bonds between haematite and clay minerals. Clay of these soils is enriched in haematite in case of low proportion of clay minerals
