Soil compaction and growth of roots on grass/white clover pasture

Results on penetrometer resistance measurements and root distribution in heavy clay soil of grass/white clover sward grazed continuously with dairy cows are given. In spring 1991 white clover was sod seeded in permanent pasture at the seed rate 7 kg/ha and than grazed with summer cut for silage. Next year the yield of grazed pasture, sward botanical composition and penetrometer resistance of soil were measured. Core method was used to sample the roots to a depth of 30 cm. Establishment of sod seeded white clover was very good. Its content during next spring was 33 %, sward was grazed at 1.5-2.3 t/ha herbage mass and daily growth of dry matter was 69-97 kg/ha. Soil with 1.1 Mg/m3 bulk density and 57.5 % porosity had 4.2-4.4 MPa penetrometer resistance in top layer at 28.2 % moisture content. Root length density at that time was in average 0.44 cm/cm2 and specific root length 17.3 m/g. These values are lower from those found in literature in average over rooted zone
