Influence of mature size on growth rate, rate of maturation and body composition within mammal species

Kastelic, M. | Salehar, A. (Biotechnical Faculty, Ljubljana (Slovenia). Zootechnical Dept.)
Growth rate, maturing rate and body composition at constant degree of maturity strongly depend on mature size. In mammals, 75 % of differences between animals in these traits are caused by mature size (Taylor, 1965). Within mammal species, these traits are influenced also by sex, line (breed) and family. These effects are partially of genetic origin and selection on growth rate, maturing rate and body composition without changes in mature size is theoretically possible. The problem is unknown degree of maturity in growing animals. Determination of degree of maturity is possible after growth period is over, on mature animals. This procedure prolongs generation interval and makes selection unsuccessful.
