Static bioassay was used to determine the acute toxicity of MS-222 (tricaine methane sulfonate) on white sea bass fries, Lates calcarifer (Bloch). The 96-h LC50 with 95 % confidence intervals of MS-222 at 19, 24 and 29 deg. celsius were estimated at 57.6 (52.84-62.78), 70.7 (65.46-76.36) and 81.4 (76.07-87.10) ppm respectively. The results on the responding reaction of white sea bass fries to MS-222, the concentration causing the sedation stage of MS-222, on the tested fries at 19, 24 and 29 deg. celsius were 5-10, 30 and 35-40 ppm respectively. MS-222 was more toxic and effective at 19 than 24 and 29 deg. celsius.
