Factors affecting growth and the yield of oil in Spanish thyme (Lippia micromera Schau.)

The plants' response to levels of N and P at different spacings was monitored during the wet and dry seasons. Individual shoot development was observed and distribution of oil along a single shoot was measured in the wet season. In a greenhouse experiment, the effect of varying levels of water stress on plant growth and oil content was observed. N application increased fresh herbage yield in the wet season. P application did not affect yield. Yield increased in both seasons at an intra-row spacing of 100 cm. Herbage yield was higher in wet season than in the dry season. Oil yield/ha increased significantly with increased plant density. Oil content was lower in the wet than in the dry season, while oil yield/ha was higher in the wet season. Fresh and dry weights decreased with increased water stress, while oil yield and content increased with increasing stress. Young shoot tips yielded the most oil, while base of the shoot yielded the lowest. Three hair types (short, long and sessile were observed). Their involvement in oil production is suggested
