Suriname has a large variety of fruit types, the most important being citrus, mango, papaya, passion fruit, West indian cherry, guava, sour sop, carambola and pineapple. Because these fruits are high in vitamins, natural pectin and acid they are particularly suited to the processing of fruit nectars, juices, jams, marmalade, jellies, pickles, dehydrated fruits and preserves. Presently, there are more than four medium sized fruit processing industries in Suriname. These are large enough to provide separate buildings for manufacturing equipment, storage of ingredients; storage of empty packages and containers, finished products and administrative offices.
