SECAP, soil erosion control and agroforest project in western Usambara: Project description

The west Usambara mountains are alocated in north eastern part of Tanzania in Tanga region. The mountainous area covers total of 4500 km sq. with a population of over 400,000 people (census 1988). In the past the west Usambara mountains were covered and protected by natural forests, remnants of which are still found. Modern farming technique like monocropping, weeding and removal of trees from the cultivated fields led to severe erosion and finally loweredsoil fertility.
