While the situation of the otter in Europe had been well known for long, in Portugal a regular collect of information started in the eighties only. Those works are the basis of the present knowledge on the status and distribution of the otter. At present, different lines of research are implemented. The first one concerns a national survey of the distribution and abundance of the population, related to the biotic and abiotic characteristics of the environment and the degree of man's use of the habitat. The second one is the specific monitoring of the otter in the net of protected areas, in view of identifying the local factors of perturbation and proposing adequate management measures. The third one respects to an ecological study on the otters inhabiting the south-west coast, with the objective of analysing the relation between resources availability and otter exploitation of the same resources, as well as man's influence on the otter through the use of these resources. The most recent lines of research are an evaluation of the impact of dams and hydro-electric installations on the otter's distribution and ecology, and a study on the current status of bioaccumulating contaminants in the Tejo catchment as determined in otter scats and fishes.
