30 years of field trials with grass-clover mixtures in Grangeneuve [Switzerland]
1996
Morand, D. (Station cantonale de production vegetale Grangeneuve (IAG), Posieux (Switzerland)) | Thoeni, E.
Despite the intensive work undertaken in the selection of new varieties, the yields of three grass-clover mixtures have not increased between 1972 and 1989. This surprising result could be explained with the positive effect of the mixture and (possibly) with the higher atmospheric ozone concentrations. Second surprising result: no correlation was found between summer rainfall and the yield of the mixtures. Most of the mixtures sown in summer produced higher yields in the first year than in the second. In the first year summer seedings produced more than spring seedings. In the second year they produced a little less than the spring seedings. We recommend to farmers living in our climatic conditions to pay special attention to the mixture 200 CH, especially for haymaking, and to the mixture 440 for either haymaking or grazing. The mixture 440 gives a high quality forage because of its high white clover content
