In autumn and spring Italian ryegrass of different dry matter levels was ensiled in small-scale silos (1.5 l) and in experimental silos (9 m3). Besides the variants using no preservative, a salt and an inoculant were tested for their influence on the fermentation quality and the aerobic stability. The inoculant improved the fermentation quality of both wilted and unwilted silages. Yet, these silages were the first ones to heat up after opening the silos. The fact that good quality silages are aerobically unstable is due to their lower acetic acid content, especially of the undissociated fraction
