The present study is an attempt to confirm the classification of 17 populations of Eragrostis curvula, through a mathematical analysis of their morphological and isoenzymatic seed characteristics. The morphological characters used were colour, form, length, width and dorsal sulcus of seed, and length of embryo. The isoenzymes analysed were esterases, acid phosphatases, and alcohol dehydrogenases. A cluster analysis and a principal components analysis were conducted. The Shannon-Weaver diversity index was used to quantify genetic diversity within and between groups. The phenogram based on morphological characters established five groups whilst that based on the isoenzymatic patterns, together with the morphological ones, defined six groups, clarifying the first taxonomic structure. The diversity index gave 65 % of variation between groups and 35 % within them, revealing a good definition of the taxonomic groups and a high uniformity of each separate group. This study corroborates the idea that morphological characters need the support of biochemical information to clarify taxonomic structures and to quantify the diversity of crop genetic resources. Esterases are polymorphic enough to allow the calculation of the phenotypic diversity between and within morphological types of Eragrostis curvula
