Based on the instrument of linear programming, five types of Swiss farms were optimised under present conditions and for the year 2002. Thus, it was possible to determine prospective effects with respect to the structure of the farm, the allocation of land, and labour and capital input. The parameters were fixed so that the analysed farms reached 80 % of their maximal income of the year 1995 in the year 2002. Based on the best management practice, the number of livestock units can be reduced and the income can be raised compared with traditional management practices. The payment of a subsidy for ruminants (without dairy cows or suckling cows) showed the highest efficiency as regards the conservation of the entire agricultural land
