The analysis of the heterotic effects of F1 hybrids between 13 varieties of the american rice (A) and 11 varieties of the indica type (H) or 8 varieties of the japonica type (K) showed that the heterotic effects of most studied characters in hybrids A X H were close to, but lower than that of H X K. Grain yields per plant, panicle number per plant and spikelet number per main panicle all showed highest heterosis, and were found usable in rice production. The heterosis in grain yields per plant showed close relationship with compatibility of the american rice. In A X K, the heterosis in grain yields per plant and panicle number per plant were highest, and the heterosis of F1 in A X K tended to be similar to that in K X K. The 1000-grain weight had lower positive heterotic effects in both A X H and A X K. The results indicated that the hybridization between american rice and indica or japonica were better models of high yield combination in rice production
