Sensitivity to PVY was investigated in an experiment on seven tomato cultivars and one hybrid. The tomato cultivars were subjected to mechanical inoculation with the necrotic strain of PVY. Cultivar sensitivity was evaluated according to the number of plants exhibiting symptoms of the disease. The content of chlorophyll a and b and total chlorophyll was determined, both in PVY-infected plants and in control plants. The highest susceptibility to PVY was exhibited by the cultivars Titan, Tomato and the hybrid Tornado F1, in which the lowest PVY titers were related to a lower number of plants with symptoms, lower symptom intensity and longer incubation period. The tomato cultivars Orbit, Dulcia, Denar and Hana turned out to be susceptible to PVY infection. Total content of chlorophyll a+b was significantly higher after infection in the Tomato cultivar, while chlorophyll a+b content was practically indentical in the virus infected plants of the cultivars Titan, Idill, Hana and Tornado F1 with the content in the control. The content of total chlorophyll significantly decreased after virus infection in the cultivars Denar, Orbit and Dulcia. The virus infection did not influence the ratio of chlorophyll a:b contents in any of the tomato cultivars.
