The potential of grass white clover sward for milk production in north-west Spain
1995
Gonzales-Rodriguez, A. (Centro de Investigaciones Agrarias Mabegondo, La Coruna (Spain))
In a trial at Galicia, northwest Spain, a total of 30 Friesian heifers calved in January-March were maintained, during the entire lactation of 1993, on a grass/white clover pasture. Two groups, with 20 and 200 kg N ha (-1) applied, were studied separately to establish the levels of milk production that mixed swards can support. From calving to turn-out in April, 5 kg head (-1) of concentrates were given with herbage silage ad libitum, making a total of around 400 kg concentrates cow (-1). Four grazing rotations were made in spring and the most part of summer and two in autumn. The net pasture yield was 12.6 and 13.3 t ha (-1) DM with a 46 per cent and 32 per cent of clover content for the 20 and 200 kg N ha (-1) applied in the treatments. Lengths of rotations were flexible to maintain herbage quality. The level of herbage utilization for the animal was similar in both treatments, resulting in a grazing pressure of 3.34 and 3.68 cows ha (-1), respectively, with similar herbage intakes, 13 kg per cow, in both treatments
