1995
Reintam, E. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia))
Estonia as well as all Eastern Europe countries are aiming to integrate into European institutions. Beyond economical and political fitness there are ethical issues in respect of animal welfare to be emphasized. Obviously national legislation should follow the basic principles elaborated and accepted by the Council of Europe. A survey is given to inform veterinarians about the conventions they are likely to be engaged in. Formally the provisions of conventions are not obligatory, nevertheless the neglience of them may result in public condemnation and economical restrictions. Basic provisions of farm animals, pet animals, international transport and slaughter are described
