Soil management in the missing of animal husbandry
1995
Vipper, H. | Lauringson, E. | Kuill, T. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia))
Simultaneous and harmonic development of soil management and animal husbandry is the most important precondition for sustainable agriculture in Estonian soil-climatic conditions. However, many producers are forced by the market conjunction to develop only soil management and specialise just in a few crops (grain crops, potato) or in a production of energy (willow, alder, high-yielding grasses). In the present time the specialisation in cereal production is the most widely spread in Estonia. This situation certainly accelerates a degradation and decline of soil fertility in a deficiency of farmyard manure. Nevertheless, according to the studies of the Institute of Soil Management and Crop Product Technology of Estonian Agricultural University the negative effect of cereals' monoculture on the agroecosystem can be reduced by a skillful diversification of crops and use of green manure
