In Estonia the importance of legumes has never been underestimated. Still, about 25 years ago grass swards were preferred in practice, because it was possible to use large amounts of cheap mineral nitrogen fertilizers. In the relatively humid climate of Estonia, the seed production of grasses is also considerably simpler than that of legumes (lucerne especially). But due to a continuous rise in the price of mineral nitrogen fertilizers in recent years, legumes play again an indispensable role as a source of nitrogen for grasslands improving the soil fertility and increasing the protein content in grass feeds. On soils with a favourable water regime, it is recommended to enlarge the acerage under galega, because it has a good persistency and a relatively stable seed yield. Galega may be sown both in pure sowings and in mixtures with tall grasses. A complete replacement of bastard and yellow lucerne by galega in Estonia is not justified
