Chilo aleniellus strand was found to have extended its food range from wild grasses to the maize crop. The vertical distribution of this species and Eldana saccharina were compared and related to the soluble carbohydrate concentration of maize internodes. The larvae of C. aleniellus were found to aggregate on the internodes above the ear and in the tassel irrespective of nutrient distribution. The distribution of E. saccharina larvae was found to correlate with the concentrations of the soluble carbohydrates in the various internodes the location of ears on the stem (correlation coefficient, r =0.73:af=13; P0.01). Stem borer damage simulation experiments indicated significant reduction of kernel taste of fresh maize
