Distribution of some N compounds in shoots and fruits of the apple cv. Jonathan after soil and foliar application of nitrogen

Apple trees cv. Jonathan grafted on MM 106 rootstock and planted in 1980 were fertilized with nitrogen. In addition to the control, tree nitrogen treatments were applied one as soil application and two as urea spray treatments. A slight increase in total amino acids contents of spurs and shoots was shown and the amount of the increase was higher in the spring. Asparagine and glutamine represented the largest amount of total amino acids in spurs and shoots. Their content remarkably increased in the shoots, but in spurs there was no distinct increase. The treatments increased the level of total amino acids in the fruits, the increase was higher at the T-stage and sometimes after storage. Asparagine, glutamine and arginine were found in the largest amounts. Nitrogen application increased NO3 and NO2 contents in the fruits. NO3 was mainly the dominant form as related to its amount. Nitrate concentration in apple fruits was higher in the fruits after storage
