The knowledge, about the structure and phytoclimate of the canopy, is very important for the studies of photosynthesis and transpiration, as these processes are the main causes of quality of the product. The methods we have known up to now did not give adequate results, therefor we considered it necessary to try a new measuring and processing method. In the method we developed, we measured the photosynthetically active light region (PAR) on a grid placed on a vertical screen, which was perpendicular to the row direction. Repeating this series of measurement several time along the row, we got a statistical sample. Represented the data as a three-dimensional surface in terms of the percentage of global PAR radiation we could separate layers of different light-intensity. The leaf area of these parts of the canopy can be calculated by the negative binomial model. We found that the result obtained by the method describe properly the conditions of different parts of the canopy, which we proved by the study of the activity of leaves, too
