Comparative evaluation of triticale and barley silage fermentation and its nutritional effects in sheep feeding

The present experiment compared the degree of fermentation of barley and triticale crop silage and its effects on dry matter intake and weight gain by sheep. Two silages have been made by green barley and triticale, using formic acid at the ensiling time. The results showed that the silages differed in their contents of crude protein and crude fibre (2.67, 15.94 and 2.37, 13.58 in barley and triticale crop silage respectively), but it did not show any effect on dry matter intake and growth rate during the feeding of silage in the groups of lambs. The lower pH value of the treated silage, compared with the untreated silage indicated the preservation effect of formic acid salt, on silages fermentation. Also during the preservation the quality of silage could be improved by slow fermentation and reduction of pH
