Surface water resource assessment of the Arakan Valley complex [Cotabato, Philippines]
1994
Gutierrez, H.M.
This paper evaluates the surface water resources of the Arakan Valley Complex [Cotabato, Philippines], using the Thiessen Polygon Method to determine the average rainfall and the Thornthwaite Method to estimate the potential evapotranspiration. Monthly streamflow data were generated for seven major rivers from the scanty flow record of seventeen streams in the area by applying a logarithmic model. The model related the logarithm of the average monthly streamflow to the logarithm of the drainage area and provided a reasonably adequate estimate of the river discharges. Coefficients of determination ranged from 0.65 to 0.96. The Arakan Valley Complex has relatively bountiful surface water resources which permit five to eight months of crop cultivation even without irrigation. The same resource can be successfully tapped for domestic water and irrigation purposes since its nature is perennial and therefore available all year round
