Programs on coconut-based farming systems of PCA-Region 8 [Philippine Coconut Authority, Davao City, Philippines]
1994
Arancon, R.N. Jr. (Philippine Coconut Authority - Region 8, Davao City (Philippines))
Activities related to the National Coconut Intercropping Program (NCIP) launched by PCA [Philippine Coconut Authority] in 1982 in Davao, Cotabato, Maguindanao, and Sultan Kudarat [Philippines] were presented. Around 54 percent of the total number of farmers assisted was highly successful. Successful ventures were attained by farmers who planted hybrid corn as intercrop to coconut followed by cattle fattening. Both projects represented 84 percent of the total successful farmer-cooperators. Some projects failed due to low price of produce and crop damage brought about by continuous rains which resulted in low percentage of loan repayment. Planting hybrid corn and cattle fattening could be successfully adopted throughout the region. Intercropping banana and pineapple in South Cotabato and eggplant in Davao City were also profitable ventures. Some recommendations were discussed based on past experiences in CBFS [coconut-based farming systems]- related activities
