Responses of selected pepper varieties to ethyl methane-sulfonate

Seeds of three varieties of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) were treated with 0.3 percent and 0.6 percent EMS with a pH between 9 to 11 at 30 deg C, to determine the responses of the M1 plants and the M2 seedlings to the mutagen. Seeds treated with 0.3 percent were soaked in the mutagen for 20 hours, while seeds treated with 0.6 percent were soaked for 10 hours. Data obtained in the M1 showed decrease in germination percentage, shoot length, plant height, seed set and survival percentage. Somatic chimeras were obtained. Decrease in shoot length, plant height at maturity, survival percentage and seed set were significant. In the M2 seedlings, chlorophyll-deficient mutants induced in decreasing frequency were viridis, xantha and albina. The three varieties showed varying responses to the different treatment conditions of EMS
