A laboratory culture program for Eucheuma and Kappaphycus has been on-going at the University of the Philippines, Marine Science Inst., Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines. The principal goals of the project are to develop inexpensive branch and tissue culture procedures for various strains of Eucheuma and Kappaphycus and to test the success of the branch cultures as seed stock for mariculture. Laboratory procedures involve the culture of branches, explants and calluses. Experiments addressing basic problems on nutrition have also been carried out
