Influence of varying light intensities on germination, growth and reproduction of Borreria laevis (Kam.) Grised

Results indicated that germination of Borreria laevis is dependent on light. Higher percent germination was obtained in seeds exposed to high light intensity while the seeds in the dark under laboratory condition almost failed to germinate. No significant differences were observed on the height and stem diameter of B. laevis subjected to varying light intensities in the field. However, significant differences were noted on the number and size of leaves. Higher number but smaller leaves were recorded in plants grown in full sunlight while lesser but bigger leaves were noted under low light intensities. Moreover, B. laevis exposed to full light intensity produced leaves which were lighter green in color while those subjected to lower light intensities were dark green. Formation of branches was also inhibited at low light intensities. Furthermore, plants grown in full sunlight were significantly heavier in terms of dry weight than those maintained in lower light intensities. On the other hand, regardless of treatments B. laevis flowered at 35 days after emergence indicating that flower initiation was not influenced by varying light intensities. However, reproductive potential of B. laevis was adversely affected by low light intensity or shading. Significant reductions in the number of flower clusters, flower per cluster, seed per cluster and the number of seeds produced per plant were observed in B. laevis grown in lower light intensities. However, no significant differences were observed on weight and size of seeds. Closer observation, however, revealed that seeds produced by plants exposed to full sunlight were smaller but heavier than those grown under low light conditions which were bigger in size but lighter in weight
